Citrus Essential Oils

Drinking citrus essential oils in your water is not only delicious, it gently helps your body detox, too.  Adding citrus oils has also helped me drink more water, because I like the taste (and can vary the taste, too).  This blog will share some of my favorite citrus oils and their health benefits, as well as some safety tips to follow when ingesting essential oils.

Safety Tips For Ingesting Essential Oils

Ingesting essential oils is fairly new in the United States; however, countries in Europe and Asia have been ingesting oils for hundreds of years.  There are a few safety tips you need to know when drinking essential oils:

  1.  Always use glass, stainless steel or ceramic glasses — never plastic!  Essential oils are potent, and they can break down the plastic, and you don’t want to be drinking that in your water.
  2. Check to see that the oil you wish to consume has a supplement fact label indicating it is intended for

internal use.  doTERRA’s essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and are recommended for internal use.  Most essential oil companies do not have pure oils recommended for internal use.  Not all doTERRA oils should be used internally, so again you will want to look for the Supplement Fact Label before ingesting.

  3. It is recommended to not exceed 24 drops of essential oils internally in 24 hours for adults.

Cassia & Grapefruit

My favorite combination of essential oils is 1 drop each of Cassia and Grapefruit essential oil.  This combo has a spicy taste that I love.  Cassia helps to support a healthy metabolism, immune system, digestive system, cardiovascular system and also maintains blood sugar levels that are already in the normal range.  Grapefruit supports a healthy metabolism and gentle detox.  Try it, and I think you will find it delicious!

Frankincense & Lemon

I start each morning with a 16 oz glass of water with 2 drops of Lemon essential oil and 1 drop of Frankincense essential oil before I enjoy a cup of coffee.  Frankincense has too many health benefits for me to list, and the reason I drink this everyday is to support healthy cellular function.  I add more Lemon than Frank for taste — Frankincense is derived from the Boswellia tree, and tastes like it comes from a tree to me.  Adding two drops of Lemon makes the taste pleasing, and also helps cleanse my body and aids in digestion.  An added benefit of starting my day this way, is I no longer get the occasional stomach upset from drinking coffee.  While this was not the purpose for me ingesting these two oils, it certainly makes me happy that I now enjoy my morning coffee with no side effects!

Slim & Sassy

Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend was not my favorite taste initially, but now I love it!  I call is an “acquired taste”, although, I have many clients who have reported loving it from the first time they try it.  This essential oil is best know for promoting a healthy metabolism, and that is the main reason I started drinking it.  I have found it also helps to manage hunger cravings when I consistently drink it throughout the day.  For an intense craving, I like to put a drop on the tip of my tongue.  I have also found Slim & Sassy to be energizing, and helpful at reducing overeating when I drink it before meals.

Tangerine

The single essential oil I love the most is Tangerine.  Not only do I love the taste in my water, but I love the scent (in a diffuser or even as a perfume).  Tangerine has powerful anti-oxidant, cleansing and purifying properties.  I find that Tangerine essential oil simply makes me happy, whether I am drinking or diffusing Tangerine.

Citrus Oils

Other citrus oils I enjoy are:  Lime, Bergamot, Clementine, Wild Orange, Red Mandarin, Green Mandarin, Yellow Mandarin, Kumquat and White Grapefruit.  While each of these boasts their own unique health benefits, all of the citrus oils offer cleansing and purifying properties.  Varying the citrus oil you drink can help you drink more water, and also vary the health benefits you enjoy.  What is your favorite citrus oil to add to your water?
