Perfume — I used to wear it everyday.  Now that I have gotten rid of synthetic fragrances in our home, it gives me a headache when I smell it on someone.  The reason?  Fragrances tend to be synthetic, toxic ingredients.  Once our body learns to recognize toxins, it will have an instant reaction to help keep us away and keep us healthy.

Fragrances – Buyer Beware

Many fragrances contain toxins that are known carcinogens or endocrine disruptors.  If you want more info on this, watch the documentary STINK on Netflix.  It is the story of one father’s quest to learn what the fragrance is in a pair of pajamas he got his daughter from the Justice store.  The pajamas had a peculiar odor, and he wanted to learn what the fragrance was, to ensure they were safe for his daughter.  What he learned is that fragrances are considered “proprietary” and the ingredients do not have to be labeled or even disclosed when someone calls to inquire.  Therefore, it is buyer beware when you see fragrance listed on a label.  The fragrances can contain any number of ingredients that can be harmful, but you can’t check the ingredients for safety if they aren’t labeled!

Essential Oils Make Great Perfumes

I have used essential oils for quite some time in place of perfumes, but the scent didn’t last as long as I would like.  I recently tried a recipe that I love and also lasts longer.  I love that the scent is heavenly, and also offers health benefits!

The recipe I used is 15 drops of doTERRA Whisper Essential Oil, 5 drops of doTERRA Passion Essential Oil and topped it off with a quality vodka.  Yes, you heard right – I made it with vodka.  You could use distilled water, but I found the scent evaporates quicker with distilled water.  When I use vodka, the scent lingers and lasts much longer.  I got the cute perfume spray bottles off AromaTools, and I have also seen them on Amazon.  I think the beautiful dispenser makes it much more attractive and fun to use.  I plan to make and give these as gifts next year for Christmas.

DIY – Gifts of Health

I love the idea of a beautiful perfume that offers health benefits to boot.  I also love that you can create any scent that you like.  While Whisper is doTERRA’s is known as the women’s blend, it also “creates a uniquely personal fragrance by combining each individual’s chemistry with a diverse blend of essential oils.”  You can combine Whisper with your favorite essential oil scent or even with an oil that would best benefit your health.  Other oils that would be great to combine with Whisper include Elevation, Rose, Citrus Bliss, Peace, Balance and Cheer.  Whisper also makes a nice perfume all by itself!
